LONG COURTYARD HOUSE
Alexandria, Sydney, Australia

This project is a contemporary addition to a turn-of-the-century terrace house in inner Sydney.

By reorienting the courtyard to the side of block, the project challenges the typical terrace configuration. It creates a north-facing side garden extending the full length of the addition.

The project is a compact building with a slender footprint, where each interior space relates to a new garden room. An equivalency of interior and exterior space is created, expanding the spatial relationship beyond the building envelope.

The addition is made up of two pure forms, each addressing its own garden. The concrete volume on the ground floor opens north to the long garden court, while a cantilevered timber box floating above opens east to a roof garden.

These discrete forms define the spatial arrangement - living takes place on the ground floor, inside the solid and elemental concrete form, while bedrooms are contained in the lightweight timber box above.

Ashbury House
Ashbury, Sydney

Sustainability is fundamental to the design of the Ashbury House. The house has a compact footprint, and employs principles of passive solar design for heating and cooling. Materials for the house have been salvaged and sourced, with a combination of recycled brick, eco concrete and Australian hardwood timber creating a warm, robust building. Recycled blackbutt timber doors and windows open out onto a productive vegetable garden and a grassy courtyard filled with chooks, bee hives and frog ponds.

The Ashbury House is located in a heritage area of Sydney's inner-west. The brief requests an addition to the existing home that would use best practice sustainable materials and design to meet the family's long term needs.

A new L-shaped footprint frames the building around a central courtyard, maintaining a connection to the garden from all aspects. The spaces beneath the tilting roof are airy and generous, in contrast to the typically low, dark spaces of Federation homes.

The addition creates a contemporary, light filled and liveable extension, while preserving the character of the existing house.

The Ashbury House is currently under construction.

National Museum of Afghanistan Ideas Competition
Kabul, Afghanistan
with Silvester Fuller, Nathan Etherington and Stringa Pty. Ltd.
With thanks to Doug &#38; Wolf.

Our proposal for the National Museum of Afghanistan aims to deliver a world class Museum and signal the gradual reversal of the decline of Kabul’s once great building fabric.

The main building “container” is a pure, glistening object, reflecting it’s surroundings and hovering above it, detached and holding it’s precious cargo. Elevated to the height of the surround wall it stands as a symbol of unity and progression towards the bright future of Kabul.

From afar the main building “container” reads as a clean monolithic object. It is pure in form, whole and complete. On approach a detailed texturing is revealed providing scale, rhythm and an ordering device for the functions within.

Re-thinking the ideas about art and collection strategy results in an alternative approach to the ordering of public and private space within the museum building. Controlled exposure to the inner workings of the museum extends the traditional museum experience.

Gibbons Rents Pocket Park
Southwark, London

The Gibbons Rents Pocket Park is a green oasis amongst the hard, vertical walls of brick and steel. Normally used as a shortcut, visitors will find this forgotten passage transformed by community garden allotments where residents can grow produce, tend flowers and trade seedlings. At the end of the laneway one discovers a pocket forest of vibrant ginko trees - entering this intimate urban living room where you can pause and reflect on the city above, you may discover a surprise view of the Shard tower reflected in the sky.

Modular corten steel planter boxes make a flexible and changeable allotment garden. They have been designed at varying heights to integrate steps, seating, table and workbenches. A raised grated steel walkway provides easy access across the site and is seeded with flowering grasses. Lit by Green chandeliers at night, Gibbons Rent re connects Bermondsey St with the Tooley St. Properties backing onto the laneway are invited to extend their boundaries to the space, creating mutual benefits for both land owners and the community.

The park is animated by a layer of events, temporary and permanent; formal and informal; large scale and small scale. The car park to the west of the site may host large temporary events in the short term, raising awareness of the site, while the area in front pf the pocket forest may be used for more regular events such as seed swaps, mobile library carts and planting workshops.

2011 Emerging Architects Prize Jury Citation

Matt Chan
The Emerging Architect Prize recognises overall excellence in practice, research or education, and involvement in the profession through leadership. Matt Chan excels in all these areas.

During his studies at the University of NSW, Matt participated in an exchange program with Sweden. Continuing his interest in research in an international context he later completed a thesis at the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands, a post-academic laboratory for design-based research in architecture and urbanism. He received a number of scholarships in recognition of this, and exhibited his work in the public realm.

Matt's contribution to the public discourse includes exhibitions, talks and other media. He participated in the 'Abundant Australia' exhibition for the 2008 Venice International Architecture Biennale, was invited to present and exhibit a future vision for Sydney at the Institute's 2008 National Conference, was part of the exhibition 'Art + Architecture 11: Home- Real and Ideal' (Boutwell Draper Gallery) and SONA's Rehab Conference 2009, and regularly presents at the Chapter's Tuesday Night Talks at Tusculum.

Matt's commitment to teaching is also outstanding and he takes great pride in the achievements of his students. Since 2003, as a Design Studio tutor and leader (primarily at the University of Sydney), he has helped students explore issues of urbanism, digital representation, civic buildings and the future of the suburb.

In his own practice, Scale Architecture (established in Amsterdam in 2002, Sydney 2004), he challenges conventional models by basing the studio on collaboration - with local and international practitioners, students and recent graduates - tapping the potential of new thinking and perspectives. Some notable measures of success with this approach include: Australia Street Infants School COLA, awarded a Small Project Architecture Commendation at the Institute's 2010 Architecture Awards; the 'Infinity Forest' installation for Sydney's 2009 Laneways By George! project; and a winning submission for Automated People Mover Stations at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

His experience in large practice at Cox Richardson and EDAW / AECOM also provided Matt opportunities to work at a larger urban scale, such as contributing to the prize winning Beijing CBD master plan competition.

In awarding the 2011 Emerging Architect Prize to Matt Chan, the jury also recognised that with the opportunities he has created to develop thinking through teaching, research, discourse and speculative work, as well as collaborative practice, Matt Chan has great potential to continue this contribution to the profession, well into his career.

Simultaneous Contrast 1 + 2
'Abundant' Exhibition at the Australian Pavilion
 Venice Architecture Biennale 2008

Description
This is a series of two models, one positive and one negative, or solid and void. It’s part of an ongoing investigation into a “context-less” courtyard house – that is, a design which must manufacture its own context. The form creates a constantly changing viewpoint via a continuous band of circulation. The project is a study of the space around the object as well as the object itself.
The first model represents the positive, solid form and the second the negative, void form.

		<description>
Bondi House 2
Bondi, Sydney, Australia

The house is a comprehensive renovation of a 50’s bungalow style house in North Bondi, Sydney. The project focussed on the reorganisation of the entire floor plan by removing partition walls and carefully inserting spatial elements into the existing bungalow shell. The Client’s brief was straightforward – to modernise the house, make it suitable for the climate and to have a space where friends and family could gather. At the same time it had to be child friendly, easy to maintain and not feel cold or lifeless.

The ground floor living space was conceived as a single space containing a number of free elements, strategically placed to define the spatial program of the house: The linear kitchen bench clad in stained American oak simultaneously frames the gallery, kitchen and dining areas. Its horizontality is punctuated by the hanging timber box that houses the extractor fan.

The compact ‘core’ defines the space by containing and concealing the working elements of the house. It separates the living area from the media area from the kitchen, but allows the space to flow freely around it. This multifunctional ‘core’ contains the guest powder room; a laundry that can be hidden away; large box elements of the kitchen housed behind timber doors; storage for the dining area; and a projection wall for the media room.

The outdoor living room is made entirely of one material, yet hosts a multitude of functions - an integrated outdoor lounge, outdoor kitchen and bbq area, display platforms and steps to the garden.
The singular use of tallowwood timber decking creates a monolithic presence offset by the texture and grain of the timber.
